How to take care of your diamonds and diamond jewellery at home
While it is a well known fact that diamonds are the hardest substance on earth and only another diamond can cut or break it, but that doesn’t mean it is safe from the various external aggressors that may cause your favourite rock to lose its sparkle.
We’re going to tell you how to maintain, clean and protect your diamonds, so you can ensure that your diamond jewellery shines the brightest, every time you wear them.
DO NOT TOUCH The Diamond
The first and foremost rule of diamond care is to avoid touching the stone. Our finger tips carry various kinds or dirt on them and when you constantly touch or rub your diamond, it will leave a layer of oil and impurities on it, which will make it go dull with the passage of time.
Keep it away from chemicals and heavy physical activity
Another way to ensure that your diamond doesn’t lose its sparkle is by keeping your diamond jewellery away from chemicals and not wearing them during any kind of physically demanding activity. It is advised when you wash your dishes or hands, you must remove your jewellery and put it aside safely. If you are partaking in any physical activity which involves pushing, heavy-lifting or contact, do not wear your diamonds, because it may cause minor to major scratches on it.
Always put on your jewellery after make up
Whenever you’re getting ready and dressing up, your jewellery, especially diamond jewellery, should be the last thing you put on. Because if you put on your jewellery first, and then use your beauty and skincare products like lotions, foundation, etc, it would get lodged in the tiny crevices between the diamond and the metal. And if the practice continues, it is going to leave your rock with a dull, yellowish shade on it, which will kill its beauty and shine.
Use padded boxes to store them
One of the best ways to protect your diamonds is by storing it in a protective case, safe from any kind of rough contact. Usually jewellers provide a velvet or suede lined padded jewellery cases to store your rings, bracelets, earrings, etc. But if you are going to store more than one piece of jewellery, get a good, soft padded case with a lid.
Soak in ammonia and clean using toothbrush
while we earlier informed you that keeping your diamond jewellery away from the diamonds is advisable to keep it safe from getting dull, here’s a DIY method for cleaning your diamond jewellery at home. This method can be used for small pieces like rings, earrings and bracelets.
Take equal parts of cold water and ammonia solution in a bowl and soak the jewellery in the liquid for half an hour. It will loosen up all the dirt on the diamond. Use a fine, soft toothbrush to gently clean it. Buy a new brush specially for this purpose.
